I made my first visit to Rushmoor Lakes in Surrey and spent the day fishing Kingfisher Lake. The fishery is set in stunning woodland surroundings, which immediately gives the whole place a peaceful and picturesque feel.
I started the session on the long pole at 13 metres. I plumbed up at around 6ft deep and began fishing maggot on the bottom.
The action was immediate, with roach and rudd coming almost one a chuck. After a while I changed to fishing shallow at 13 metres, starting at around 18 inches deep.
I then shortened the line and came back to six metres, fishing both on the bottom in around 5ft of water and shallow at approximately 12 inches. Again, the roach and rudd were very willing to feed.
Among the steady stream of silverfish was a lovely crucian carp of around 1lb, which was probably the highlight of the early part of the session, along with a small perch.
Later in the day I decided to switch to the feeder. I used a bright red wafter with Supercrush groundbait and cast out to around 20 metres.
Within minutes I was attached to what felt like a big double-figure common carp. After a fantastic battle lasting around 10 minutes, I managed to get the fish close to the net, but unfortunately lost it right at the last moment.
Thankfully, I didn’t have to wait too long for another chance. Around 10 minutes later the rod went again and this time I landed a lovely mirror carp of at least 9lb.
The bright red wafter continued to produce, with an F1 and another crucian carp also taking the bait.
It turned out to be a really wonderful day’s fishing at Rushmoor Lakes. Kingfisher Lake offered plenty of action throughout the session and a nice variety of fish.
After such an enjoyable first visit, I have a feeling Rushmoor Lakes is somewhere I will be returning to regularly.
